Practice raises questions that can be investigated through research, which in turn impacts on practice. The metaphor of research as a journey is employed to structure the book: in Chapter 1 the journey is planned, with an emphasis upon the importance of methodology, and knowing how to research. In Chapter 2 the terrain of the research field is mapped, with an explanation of the value and purpose of reviewing the context in which any research is conducted.
Chapter 3 focuses upon identifying a specific research question, and how to structure and write a research proposal. A greater worry is that the implied linearity of such a journey metaphor perhaps precludes insights into how research progress is often labyrinthine, or circular, not to mention spiralling, one way or the other! She did, however, recognise the value of the section dealing with planning and structuring a research proposal pages The graphic layout of the plan Figure 3.
